If you live in an area that is prone to getting hurricanes, or simply has a high chance of getting them, you will want to make sure that you are doing everything you can to protect your home. You will want to take proactive steps long before the warning of an approaching hurricane. Here are some of the things that you can do to prepare your home for the possibility of a hurricane:
Have Impact Windows Installed
If you want to make sure that there is very little chance that your windows will shatter during any major storm, you will want to pay for impact windows installation. The goal should be to have all of your windows replaced with impact resistant windows. However, if your budget does not allow for that at the moment, you will want to focus on replacing the windows that face the direction strong winds and water would come from. Start with those and then replace the other windows as your budget allows.
Have Hurricane Shutters Installed
Instead of trying to run around nailing boards over all of your windows when there is a hurricane heading your way, you can simply close your hurricane shutters. When you have these installed, all you will have to do is quickly close all of the shutters. Since this way of covering your windows will not take a lot of time, you will have more time to dedicate to other tasks that must be completed before the major storm arrives.
Have Your Roof Secured
You will want a contractor to climb up on your roof to inspect its current condition and then make any needed repairs. By securing your roof, you will not have to worry as much about pieces of it easily coming off during a major storm. This is vital because roof damage is expensive and it can lead to a lot of water entering your home, causing even more expensive repair needs. Try to find a contractor that can handle the inspection of your roof and the installation of new windows and hurricane shutters.
Now that you have gone through all of that, you will want to start making a list of the projects that you need to complete in the near future so your home is hurricane-ready. If you need assistance with this, you can always hire a contractor or a hurricane proofing company. They can inspect the entire exterior of your home to decide which repairs and upgrades need to be made.Share
