Years ago, if you wanted to build a home, you would have to separately contract with a few different people: an architect to draw the plans, a builder to actually build the house, and maybe even a few carpenters and landscaping experts to put the aesthetic finishing touches on the space. Some people today still take this approach — but most are now opting to hire a design-build company instead.
A design-build company is an organization that can handle the entire home-building project, from the design to the finishing landscaping touches, in-house. There are a couple of reasons why this approach has become so popular and why you should also consider a design-build team for your custom home building project.
1. There are fewer miscommunications between the architect and the builder.
If you hire an architect and a builder separately, those two may not know each other and they may not communicate with each other well. If the builder has a question about the plans, it's not helpful if the architect is hard to contact or does not have a good answer. With a design-build company, the architect and builder on your project will be used to working with each other, so there will be fewer issues with miscommunication.
2. You won't have to do as much waiting.
Building a custom home takes time. Much of that time is spent waiting for someone's schedule to open up so you can move onto the next stage of the project. If you hire a separate architect and builder and the architect finishes your plans in January but the builder is not free until June, you won't get your home built for a while. With a design-build team, they can give you a better idea of your project's timeline from the get-go and you won't be sitting around waiting for another company to take over.
3. You don't have to do as much shopping around.
You really should thoroughly vet anyone who is going to work on your custom home building project. When you hire separate architects and builders, this means interviewing several architecture companies and several builders — which can take a lot of time. It's so much easier to just compare two or three different design-build companies and then choose one to handle the entire project.
Design-build is the way of the future when it comes to custom homes. This is one bandwagon you need to jump on.
