3 Ways To Prepare Your Central Air Conditioning For Winter

Construction & Contractors Blog

As summer comes to an end and winter is approaching, you should start thinking about getting your AC ready for winter. This may not be something you normally do, but taking the right steps may help you prevent problems with your AC next summer when you need to use it. There are several steps you can take, but here are three that are really important.

Clean the Outdoor Condenser

A central air conditioning unit has two parts, and one part is located outside. This part is called the AC condenser, and it is a vital part to a central AC system. The condenser helps eliminate hot air from a house, but it tends to get dirty because it is outside.

To clean the condenser, you must begin by shutting off the power to the unit. This may involve unplugging the unit, or you might have to shut it off at the AC unit inside your house. Once the power is shut off, take a water hose and begin spraying it clean. You can also use a scrub brush to try to help eliminate any debris that is trapped inside the unit.

Cover the Unit

The second step to winterizing your AC unit is to purchase a cover for the outdoor condenser. Covers come in many types, but most are made of vinyl or plastic. The cover should completely cover the unit, and you should leave it in place all winter.

Covering your unit protects it from debris falling inside, and it may also stop critters from making homes in the unit.

Clean the Inside Evaporator

The final step takes place in your house by your AC system. While there are numerous parts you can clean on the system, your main focus should be on the evaporator. This part is typically located near the bottom of an AC system and should be next to the blower motor.

You can use a vacuum to clean this part of your system, and it helps if you have attachments to use with your vacuum. The main goal is to remove dust and debris from the evaporator, and a vacuum works great for this. You may also want to replace the filter in the system at this time.

By taking these steps, your AC will be protected for the winter and should be ready for use when summer comes. If you would like help cleaning your AC system, you can hire a company, like One Hour Air Conditioning & Heating (West Pasco), that offers AC repair services.
